Dr. Prosanto Kumar Chowdhury is a distinguished Thalassemiologist, dealing with Haemoglobinopathies and Thalassemia. He has around two decades of experience in his field. Dr. Chowdhury has a string of qualifications under his belt, beginning with his MBBS degree which he finished with Honours and a gold medal. He then went on to do the Post-graduate Diploma in Maternal and Child Health and the M Sc. Degree in Haemoglobinopathy. He also has the FAIIMT and FRMTS accreditations. In addition, he has had extensive specialised training in institutes, hospitals and universities both in India and abroad. He also attends to patients as a Visiting Consultant at other established hospitals.
Since April 2014, Dr. Chowdhury has also been designated Technical Director, Cordlife Sciences India Pvt. Ltd., an outfit associated with research and development of stem cell related activities. He has been credited with establishing the product procurement, processing and release guidelines for the facility. Prior to this he was Medical, Technical and Laboratory Director with the same unit where his accomplishments included building and establishing the Cord Life India Umbilical Cord Blood Banking facility. Through his career, he has held many other positions including Medical Officer In-charge at the Bhoruka Research Centre for Haematology and Blood Transfusion; Non-Resident Registrar, Department of Transfusion Medicine and BMT at the Kothari Medical Centre and Research Institute; and, Medical Officer, Thalassaemia Management and Day Care Centre, Thalassaemic Guardians Association in Kolkata.
Dr. Chowdhury is experienced in various procedures related to his field, including diagnosis by electrophoresis, HPLC, blood grouping, cross matching and transfusion, quality testing of blood before transfusion by antibody screening, serology for TTD by ELISA and CLIA, chelation therapy, etc. Further, he conducts sessions incorporating pre-marital and pre- and post-pregnancy counselling, pre- and post-natal testing and further management, including pre-natal tests such as chorionic villous sampling, amniocentesis and cordocentesis.
Dr. Prosanto Chowdhury is passionate about presenting opinions and theories related to his area of expertise. He has made scores of specialised presentations on aspects of thalassaemia and haemoglobinopathy, including some to esteemed bodies such as the Health Ministers of the WHO Expert Committee and the South East Asia Regional Organisation (SEARO). He was part of the team that performed the first bone marrow stem cell transplantation, peripheral blood stem cell transplantation and umbilical cord blood stem cell transplantation in thalassaemia in Eastern India. He was also involved in setting up the first rural thalassaemia care and screening centre in Burdwan in 1994. Besides this, he has also participated as a speaker, panellist or delegate at various summits, conferences and workshops at which he has made dozens of oral and poster presentations. Besides having written articles and papers that have been published in peer-reviewed journals, many of his presentations have also been published as extracts.
Dr. Prosanto Chowdhury has a keen interest in teaching and imparting education too. To this end, he has been involved in counselling of the general public by mass seminars, school, college and community level awareness meetings and participation in health camps. He has participated in many study-related modules as part of the Continuous Medical Education process. He is member of several esteemed associations in the industry. Besides English, he is conversant in Hindi, Bengali and Gujarati.
